Tourism and visitor spending
Visit Milwaukee’s 2024 tourism impact figures place Milwaukee County at the center of the local events economy. The county’s tourism industry produced $4.321 billion in total economic impact, a 3.7% year-over-year increase. Direct visitor spending reached $2.439 billion, up 4.1%, and tourism supported 28,091 full-time jobs, up 3.2%.
Tourism also generated $242.2 million in state and local tax revenue, an increase of 4.8%. Visit Milwaukee reported that Milwaukee County represented 16.38% of Wisconsin’s total tourism economic impact and about 16% of the state’s tourism spending in 2024. The same source described 2024 as the third straight year of record-setting impact for Milwaukee County.
Wisconsin’s statewide tourism economy reached $25.8 billion in 2024. Visitors made 114.4 million visits, exceeding the previous 2019 record of 113.2 million. Wisconsin tourism supported 182,000 part-time and full-time jobs, and visitors generated a record $1.7 billion in state and local taxes. Greater Milwaukee contributed $6.632 billion to Wisconsin’s tourism economy and accounted for 25.68% of the state’s total tourism impact.
Visit Milwaukee’s 2024 tourism impact figures also put average Milwaukee County tourism spending at $6.6 million per day. The reported tourism household tax-equivalent burden was $622 per household. These measures describe the broad economic footprint of visitor activity rather than attendance at one individual event.
A separate Visit Milwaukee tourism explainer reported 22.1 million Milwaukee visitors in 2025, up 7.41% from the prior year. It also reported about 328,000 hotel room nights and $2.84 billion in direct visitor spending for 2025. Because these figures are from a separate explainer and measurement period, they should be read alongside, rather than substituted for, the 2024 county tourism-impact figures.
Visitor activity is especially important to food and hospitality businesses. Visit Milwaukee’s travel-week campaign reported that visitors supplied 34% of restaurant spending. The tourism explainer reported that Milwaukee County tourism represented 28% of all spending in the city and that tourism supported more than 28,000 Milwaukee families in 2025.
Events, conventions, and room nights
Events create a measurable pipeline beyond same-day attendance. Visit Milwaukee booked 328,659 room nights in 2025, reaching 114% of its goal. The 2025 total was 14.4% higher than the previous year. Sports Milwaukee accounted for 79,424 room nights and generated $125 million in economic impact during 2025.
Marketing activity also had reported reach. The City of Festivals campaign delivered 11.4 million impressions in 2025. Visit Milwaukee said website growth influenced 9.4 million visitors, a 10% year-over-year increase, and generated $10.5 million in direct visitor spending. The organization’s 2026 annual meeting took place March 4, 2026, in front of more than 800 guests at the Bradley Symphony Center; the same attendance figure was reported for the organization’s 2024 annual meeting.
The 2024 Republican National Convention illustrates the scale of a concentrated event. The convention ran July 15–18, 2024, over four days. Visit Milwaukee’s RNC report attributed $321.5 million in total economic impact and $216.3 million in direct spending to the event. Operational spending totaled $162.2 million, while off-site visitor spending totaled $54.1 million.
The RNC supported 3,441 part-time and full-time local jobs and generated $16.8 million in state and local taxes. These figures separate total impact, direct spending, operational spending, and off-site spending, so they are not additive measures of one single spending category.
Future bookings also show why hotel supply matters to event planning. Visit Milwaukee’s National Travel and Tourism Week campaign reported more than $174 million in future economic impact from events booked for the 12 months after Baird Center expansion completion. Those bookings filled more than 192,000 hotel room nights.

Festivals and recurring public events
Summerfest has operated since 1968 and spans 75 acres along Lake Michigan. Summerfest lists 12 stages and hundreds of performances; the Visit Milwaukee Summerfest page says ticket holders receive access to all 11 grounds stages. Summerfest runs for nine days, and its 2026 dates were June 18–20, June 25–27, and July 2–4. The American Family Insurance Amphitheater seats 23,000.
Milwaukee’s cultural festival calendar includes several events with clearly defined durations. Milwaukee Irish Fest is a four-day lakefront festival. German Fest is a three-day festival, dates to 1981, and attracts tens of thousands of visitors. The City of Milwaukee Health Department reported that the 2025 Juneteenth street festival hosted more than 110 food vendors.
The same Health Department source described Juneteenth as one of nearly 100 permitted festivals held across Milwaukee annually. Its Community Environmental Health program conducts roughly 450 inspections in a typical festival season. The source also described Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration as the largest in the country.
Public-service events add another dimension to the calendar. The Milwaukee Firefighters Honor Guard was asked to attend 84 events in 2024 and had at least one member present at 72 of them. The Honor Guard comprises 20 firefighters.
The Milwaukee Fire Department’s 2024 annual report recorded 211 visitors to the Survive Alive House during Doors Open Milwaukee in September 2024. The facility provided safety programs to 3,717 fifth graders, 3,993 second graders, 238 private school students, and 193 children in Summer Adventure and Summer Safety programs during 2024.
The department’s Junior Fire Institute serves students ages 14 to 20. Attendance climbed to 40–50 students each month, while the Junior Fire Institute Summer Camp had 50 spots that filled every year.
Baird Center and convention infrastructure
Baird Center’s expansion and modernization cost $456 million and opened in May 2024, according to a Wisconsin Center District LEED Gold release. The same release placed the expanded footprint at 1.3 million square feet. A Baird Center technical manual also lists a 1.3 million-square-foot facility, a 300,275-square-foot exhibit hall, a 37,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, and a 30,000-square-foot rooftop Baird Ballroom.
The technical manual lists 73,566 square feet of additional meeting space, as well as the ability to divide the facility into as many as 52 breakout rooms. Baird Center has 22 push-to-floor loading docks. Together, these specifications help explain how Milwaukee can handle simultaneous exhibitions, meetings, receptions, and breakout sessions at convention scale.
Visit Milwaukee’s economic drivers sheet lists the four-county Milwaukee area population at 1.5 million and the seven-county area population at 2 million. Milwaukee County’s listed population is 918,661, while the City of Milwaukee’s is 563,305. The same source lists total nonfarm employment in the Milwaukee area at 866.7 thousand and leisure and hospitality employment at 86.1 thousand.
For event organizers and visitors, the numbers point to a market supported by both destination-scale festivals and a broad convention network: $4.321 billion in 2024 Milwaukee County tourism impact, 328,659 room nights booked by Visit Milwaukee in 2025, 19,899 area hotel rooms, and venues ranging from intimate cultural spaces to 40,000-seat stadium capacity.
